HYPOTHETICAL CONVERSATION

I had a hypothetical conversation with a hypothetical deaf zealot who is mighty proud of being deaf. I am not a hypothetical person.
I asked the hypothetical zealot, “Are you really, truly proud of being deaf’?”
The hypothetical zealot replied, “Of course I”
And I asked, “Should blind people be proud of being blind? Should they be glad to be blind?”
The hypothetical zealot replied, “Of course!”
And I asked, “Should deaf-blind people who can neither hear nor see be proud of their handicap?”
“Absolutely!” he answered.
And I asked, “Should people who were born terribly deformed because their mothers were on the Thalidomide anti-pregnancy pill when they were conceived, should these people who were born without both arms and both legs, should they be proud of their quadruple deformity?”
The hypothetical zealot replied, “Of course, of course!”
I was stunned by his words. “Why are you so emphatic about the pride of deformity and handicap?” I asked him.
“What else is there of which we can be proud?” the hypothetical zealot answered.

We are now into the 21 st Century, and every wherewithal, both spiritual and material, is available to enable educators to start producing classes of deaf children who are bi-lingually communicatively literate in both sign language and the language of the land, and to enable administrators to help deaf people to become employed in the same good jobs earning the same good money and enjoying the same great employment challenges and responsibilities known to the larger hearing society.

Any job where hearing ability is not a mandatory requirement for employment is fair game for qualified deaf job-seekers.

All spiritual and material tools are in place to help deaf people know and enjoy the pride and reap the benefits of great personal achievement wrought by the application of their effort and the contribution of their skills, talents and lives.

It is necessary to sensitize both deaf and hearing people to the hard truths of the deaf condition, in particular the truths of failed education and severely restricted employment opportunity, so that productive response to these truths can ensue.

April 10 was my 75th birthday. After more than 20 years, it’s time for me to scale down my efforts for the deaf.
